I have been meaning to try the Blue Sky Cafe in the Hillcrest Shopping Center for some time. Shopping center restaurants often leave a lot to be desired in terms of atmosphere. That is not the case at this Caribbean inspired eatery. Walking into it is a bit like walking into a Jimmy Buffet concert, minus the drug and alcohol influenced Parrotheads (at least on this particular day at lunch).
The joint is open for lunch Wednesdays through Fridays. Dinner every night. A friend of mine had told me he had “the best burger” there. It was very good American Kobe beef, cooked just right and served with homemade chips: both potato and plantain (Kosmo Kramer would be proud).
A Caribe turtle soup was some of the best take on snapper I’ve had. Almost like a chili. That talking dog from the Bush’s baked beans and chili commercials better not get the recipe.
My friend ordered the same, but also got a Jamaican beef patty (spiced beef inside dough and fried). He said it was might tasty. At $2.00, it was a bargain (nice and big and not crappy, as often cheap and big menu items can be).
Dessert was a Caribbean rum infused pecan pie. My cardiologist will not be happy, but I was.
$42.00 for lunch for two, $50.00 with the tip (“actually it’s not tipping I believe in. It’s over-tipping” – Todd Wilkinson, “My Blue Heaven”)
The Executive chef used to run the kitchen at the Jefferson House (rest in peace) restaurant and this joint shares the same owners.
Go there. Eat. Be happy.
