As a certified lover of all things food-related, you might think that over the years I’d have tried Tony Luke’s. You’d be wrong. Sure, I heard about the famed Roast Pork w/ Sharp Provolone and Broccoli Rabe, but I’d never tried it.
I finally broke down after reading review after review in the past decade waxing poetic about this sandwich. So, following a big Flyers playoff win, The Fatman and I made our way to Tony Luke’s.
I ordered the pork w/ Sharp provolone (I don’t like broccoli rabe) and Fatman ordered a cheesesteak.
My Roast Pork Italian sandwich sans broccoli rabe.
Dude. Neither of these sandwiches were very good. We both observed that the bread tasted like day old (this was about 10 p.m. on a Tuesday.)
For my money, the pork was o.k. I’ve had better. The sharp provolone was a nice option and it sure added to the taste, but I would not bother ordering this sandwich again. I looked at the Fatman’s steak wishing I’d gotten one of those instead.
And then – he didn’t finish it. My first sign it might not be all it cracked up to be. It wasn’t, he reported. I’ll let him add his own commentary, but next time I’m headed to South Philly for a sandwich, I’m headed to Pat’s or Geno’s.
Sorry, Tony Luke.
